*CEJA's SERVICES ARE ALWAYS SLIDING SCALE*

Can you believe it's almost time for the new school year? For students with executive functioning challenges, getting back into the swing of things can be especially difficult, and establishing a solid back-to-school routine is essential. We’ve put together some tips for a smooth transition.

TIP #1: Game Plan with a Schedule

Tackling chaos head-on by creating a schedule is essential. Work together with your child to map out a daily routine and start practicing before the school year starts. Make it visual, colorful, fun and stick it up on the fridge or bedroom wall so they can easily follow along.

Tip #2: Chunk It Up

Big tasks can feel overwhelming, right? Help your student break them down into bite-sized pieces. Think of it like a video game with levels to conquer. Use checklists or task cards to keep track of progress and continue to celebrate those victories throughout the school year.

Tip #3: Organization Station

Organization doesn’t always come naturally, but it can be taught. Equip your child now with planners, folders, and colorful dividers and practice using them before the school year begins. Teach them how to keep track of assignments, important dates, and class materials. Reinforcement and consistency are key to keeping this habit up.

Tip #4: Master Time Management

Teach your child time management tricks like setting timers, alarms, or using smartphone apps. Encourage them to prioritize tasks by making checklists with time reminders but be sure to keep it simple so they will continue to use them after the first day of school.

Tip #5: Tag Team with Teachers

Teamwork makes the dream work! Connect with teachers before the school year kicks off to share info about their executive functioning challenges. A one page “cheat sheet” with strengths, struggles, and helpful strategies that have worked in the past makes an easy reference for teachers as they get to know your child.

Remember, every kid is unique, and what works for one might not work for another. Transitions are hard. Be patient, keep the vibes positive, and celebrate every little achievement along the way.

As a reminder, we offer sliding scale and discounted packages to help your child with executive functioning and any other support they might need to rock the upcoming school year.

Wishing you all an absolutely incredible year ahead!
