*CEJA's SERVICES ARE ALWAYS SLIDING SCALE*

As summer approaches, it's time to address the summer slide. Research shows that students experience a decline in academic skills over summer break, but with the right strategies, you can help your child maintain their learning momentum and ensure they're well-prepared for the upcoming school year. Let's take a closer look.

THE REALITY OF THE SUMMER SLIDE

Students lose up to two months of grade-level equivalency in math and reading skills over summer break. This regression can significantly impact their academic progress and hinder their readiness for the next grade. A recent study of 3rd-5th graders also showed that, on average, students lost about 20% of their school-year gains in reading and 27% in math over summer. The impact on students with learning difficulties is shown to be even more pronounced.

PREVENTION IS KEY

Fortunately, there are effective ways to prevent the summer slide and keep your child engaged in learning throughout the summer months. Here are some proven strategies:

Tip #1 - ENCOURAGE REGULAR READING

Reading is a powerful tool for combating summer slide. Set aside dedicated reading time each day and create a summer reading list with your child. Visit the local library or explore online resources to find age-appropriate books and digital reading tools that capture their interests.

Tip #2 - engage in educational activities

Incorporate educational activities into your child's daily routine. Encourage them to solve puzzles, play educational games, or explore interactive learning apps. Engaging in such activities will stimulate their cognitive skills while having fun.

Tip #3 - ramp up on ed therapy

If your child requires additional academic support, consider increasing education therapy programs over the summer. These specialized interventions can address specific learning challenges and help bridge any skill gaps that may exist while keeping them on track to start the upcoming school year prepared.

Tip #4 - enroll in summer camps

Summer camps provide a fantastic opportunity for children to learn and explore new areas of interest. Look for camps that offer academic enrichment programs alongside recreational activities. This combination will ensure your child's continuous intellectual growth.

Keeping your student actively engaged in learning throughout summer break can make a remarkable difference in their educational journey. Let's work together to beat the summer slide and set them up for a successful academic year ahead!
